About the Intermediate licence

The Intermediate licence is the middle of the three UK licence levels. It allows up to 100 W PEP on most bands and builds on the Foundation with more electronics, radio theory and practical skills. The exam is run by the RSGB and can be taken at a local exam centre or online with remote invigilation. Under Ofcom's 2024 changes, Intermediate callsigns are moving to the M8 and M9 series.

These questions are written for this site to help you check your understanding. They aren't official exam questions, so use them alongside the RSGB's Intermediate manual and a course.

Study tips

  • Practise the sums by hand: Ohm's law, power, series and parallel, decibels and wavelength. The Ohm's law and decibel calculators check your answers.
  • Build something. The practical side of the course is easier if you've soldered a kit.
  • When you're ready, move on to the Full licence quiz.
